I recently stumbled upon a fascinating story on News18.com about a unique temple in Tamil Nadu that piqued my interest.
Did you know there’s a Hanuman Temple that can only be worshipped in the summer because it’s submerged underwater during the monsoon season? Let me tell you about it.
This temple called the Patala Anjaneyar Temple, is located about two kilometers from the Attaiyambatti division road in the Namakkal district.
What makes it special is that it sits a few feet below ground level.
You actually have to go through a narrow trapdoor and descend a few steps to reach it.
The temple is surrounded by fields and has a lake nearby.
When the rainy season hits, the lake overflows and completely submerges the temple.
The most amazing thing is that even though it’s underwater for nearly three months each year, the temple’s structure remains perfectly intact.
Devotees can only visit and worship here during the summer, which is about 6-7 months of the year.
Worship at this temple is particularly special on the auspicious days of Amavasya and Pournami.
Devotees offer Hanuman’s favorite, Vadamalai, and the deity is beautifully adorned with special decorations and tulsi garlands.
Despite its unusual circumstances, locals still gather on the full moon day of Amavasya to honor Anjaneya, keeping traditions alive.
Interestingly, this isn’t the only submerged temple in India.
There’s another Hanuman Temple in Virwas village of Karauli in Rajasthan that also spends most of the year underwater.
Learning about this temple taught me how resilient and adaptive cultural practices can be.
Despite natural challenges, people find ways to continue their traditions and keep their faith strong.
It’s a beautiful reminder of the strength of human devotion and the timelessness of our traditions.
