For years, Priya had lived in the Sharma household, trying to find her place.
The home was always busy, bustling with activity, but it was also controlled by her mother-in-law, Shalini, whose opinions were as firm as the walls around them.
Shalini was a woman who had ruled her own world with strictness, and Priya, ever the optimist, believed that with time, she could adjust to this new life.
But slowly, the weight of her silence became unbearable. Shalini’s domineering ways and constant interference in Priya’s life slowly chipped away at her peace.
She kept adjusting, kept compromising, but the emotional burden grew heavier with every passing day.
Her husband, Rohan, was gentle, responsible, and always supportive of her career.
But when it came to the emotional landscape of their home, he was unaware.
Whenever Priya tried to speak up, to share her discomfort, Rohan’s defense of his mother was swift. “You’re overthinking it, Priya. She’s just trying to help,” he would say, and Priya, feeling misunderstood, would close off even more.
And so, she lived in silence, hoping things would change on their own. But they didn’t.
The frustration built, turning into quiet tears that no one saw.
It wasn’t until they attended a counseling session that Rohan began to understand the depth of Priya’s struggles.
The counselor, with her calm voice, simply stated, “You’ve been carrying this alone, Priya. And you don’t have to.”
Rohan looked at Priya, his eyes widening with realization. “I didn’t know it was this hard for you,” he whispered.
Priya took a deep breath. “I didn’t know how to say it without feeling like I was attacking your mother.”
Later that evening, Rohan reached for her hand. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice thick with regret. “I never realized how much you were holding inside. I should’ve listened.”
For the first time in a long while, Priya felt a flicker of hope.
It wasn’t a grand gesture, but it was a start. They weren’t fixed, but they were on their way—learning, step by step, to understand each other better.
