Star Health and Allied Insurance has launched a groundbreaking initiative by introducing an insurance policy in Braille.
This move aims to empower visually impaired individuals in India by allowing them to access health insurance information independently.
The Policy
The new “Special Care Gold” policy is specifically designed for individuals with disabilities of 40% or more, including those with physical, sensory, or cognitive impairments.
According to a 2022 study by the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, vision impairment results in a staggering economic loss of Rs 646 billion in productivity.
Inclusivity Campaign
Star Health is not only focused on insurance but also on financial inclusivity.
They are offering visually impaired individuals the chance to become health insurance agents.
This initiative provides training and upskilling opportunities, allowing these individuals to work remotely and earn an income.
Anand Roy, the MD & CEO of Star Health Insurance, stated their dedication to making health insurance accessible to all, including the 34 million visually impaired people in India.
He mentioned that this initiative aligns with the IRDAI’s vision of “Insurance for All,” supporting both health coverage and financial empowerment.
Collaboration and Support
The Braille policy was developed in collaboration with the National Association of the Blind (NAB).
It offers essential medical treatments and support services that are often unavailable to the visually impaired community.
At the launch event, Srikanth Bolla, Co-Founder of Bollant Industries and a visually impaired entrepreneur, expressed his support by saying that the “Special Care Gold” policy was not merely an insurance policy but a step towards genuine inclusivity.
As part of the initiative, Bolla has become a licensed health insurance agent with Star Health.
The program includes fully funded exam preparation for new agents, complete with audio training and assistance from scribes.
A dedicated hotline will also provide ongoing support for agents with disabilities.
Conclusion
Star Health’s introduction of a Braille insurance policy is a significant step towards empowering visually impaired individuals in India.
By focusing on accessibility and inclusivity, this initiative not only provides health coverage but also opens doors for financial opportunities within the visually impaired community.
