Over 1 Billion Youngsters at Risk of Hearing Loss, WHO Warns

The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded the alarm about a growing problem: the risk of hearing loss among young people.

A new report reveals that over 1 billion individuals aged 12 to 35 could face serious hearing issues by 2050 if current habits don’t change.

The main culprit? The common use of earphones, earbuds, and other personal listening devices at dangerously high volumes.

Current Situation

Right now, around 500 million young people are already experiencing some degree of hearing loss.

Shockingly, 25% of these cases are due to long-term exposure to loud sounds from personal audio devices.

Plus, 50% of those affected have also been exposed to loud music in places like clubs, cinemas, and gyms.

Volume Levels and Risks

The WHO’s report highlights that personal listening devices often operate at volume levels between 75 and 136 decibels.

These high levels can severely damage hearing health. To put this into perspective, safe listening levels are between 20 and 30 decibels, which is about the volume of a normal conversation.

Dr. BP Sharma, a former ENT professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, warns that extended exposure to loud sounds can harm the tiny sensory cells in the ears, leading to irreversible hearing loss.

The Permanent Problem of Noise-Induced Deafness

Dr. Sharma emphasizes that noise-induced deafness is permanent.

Currently, there are no effective treatments or surgeries available to repair the damaged high-frequency nerves.

This highlights the importance of taking preventive measures before it’s too late.

WHO Recommendations

To protect against hearing loss, the WHO advises keeping the volume on personal devices between 75 and 105 decibels and limiting the time spent listening.

The organization stresses that prevention is key; once hearing is damaged, it cannot be reversed.

Conclusion

As young people increasingly use personal listening devices, the risk of hearing loss is rising alarmingly.

By following WHO guidelines and being mindful of volume levels, we can help protect the hearing health of current and future generations.
