So, who’s in charge of keeping things ethical? Well, it depends on the size of the ship, or company.
A tiny rowboat might not need a whole crew to handle ethics, but a massive cruise ship definitely does.
Here are some of the people who usually take the lead on ethics:
The Boss (CEO):
This person is the captain of the ship. They need to really care about ethics and show everyone else how it’s done. If the boss doesn’t care, it’s like the captain saying, “Who cares about icebergs?” Not good.
The Ethics Committee:
Think of them as the ship’s navigators. They make sure everyone is on the right track and help create rules for ethical behavior.
The Ethics Team:
These are like the ship’s officers. They help put the ethics rules into action, train everyone, and deal with any ethical problems that pop up.
The Ethics Officer:
This person is like the ship’s ethics expert. They know all about ethical stuff and can help people make tough decisions.
The Ombudsperson:
This is like the ship’s counselor. They listen to people’s problems and help them figure out what to do when they’re facing an ethical dilemma.
Not Every Ship Needs a Full Crew

But as a company grows, it’s usually a good idea to add more people to the ethics team.
